Transportation - Darien is 38 miles from New York City on the main line of Metro-North Railroad. Commuting time is less than an hour. Limousine service at frequent intervals provides easy access to Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark airports. Westchester Airport is within 30 minutes. Neighboring areas are easily reached via the Merritt Parkway and Interstate 95.
Education - The town's public education system has a national reputation for excellence. A strong back-to-basics curriculum is stressed in coordination with an emphasis on individual instruction at every level from kindergarten through high school. Average classroom size at the elementary level is 21. Structurally, there are three levels: Elementary schools (grades K-5), Middlesex Middle School (grades 6-8), and Darien High School. Many outstanding preschool programs are also available.

Recreation - Darien has two fine beaches with lifeguard protection, and an excellent swimming instruction program offered by the local Red Cross chapter. Residents have the use of many tennis and paddle tennis courts at the beach and at other locations in town. Indoor tennis is also available. Programs are offered using schools, playgrounds, and beaches, and local organizations sponsor a wide variety of sports activities for young people. Since 1990, high school students have had a place where they go to meet, eat, hang out and just have fun. It's called The Depot. Sailing and boating are very popular at the Darien Boat Club and the Noroton Yacht Club. Ice skating during winter months takes place on several ponds as well as at the Darien Ice Rink, which is available for local hockey teams, figure skating, and public skating.
Government - Darien's legislative powers are vested in a Representative Town Meeting (RTM) form of government. Town affairs are administered by a five-member Board of Selectmen.
