New Canaan is a
quiet rural town of 23 square miles and almost 19,000 people located
north of Darien and east of Stamford. Commercialism is carefully
controlled and restricted to a small central shopping area. In the
village itself, houses are older and charming, but on lots of one-half
acre or less.
What New Canaan really
offers is perhaps the last vestiges of a way of life - a classic New
England village with a touch of sophistication and easy access to New
York City. The attraction is easy - leaving is a little more
difficult.
Education -
New Canaan
Public Schools are
regularly rated among the best in the state. Approximately 3,100
public school students attend three elementary schools serving grades
K-4, Saxe Middle School serving grades 5-8, and New Canaan High
School. Nearly 90% of graduates continue with formal education.
There are three fine private schools and numerous nursery schools.

Library expanded in 1937, 1952, and again in 1979 with the addition
of the Lapham Wing. Growth of the Library’s collection from a
few hundred donated volumes to 170,000 volumes today has occurred
parallel to growth in daily visitors and circulation of materials.
