New Canaan is a quiet rural town of 23 square miles and almost 19,000 people located north of Darien and east of Stamford. Commercialism is carefully controlled and restricted to a small central shopping area. In the village itself, houses are older and charming, but on lots of one-half acre or less.

What New Canaan really offers is perhaps the last vestiges of a way of life - a classic New England village with a touch of sophistication and easy access to New York City. The attraction is easy - leaving is a little more difficult.

Education - New Canaan Public Schools are regularly rated among the best in the state. Approximately 3,100 public school students attend three elementary schools serving grades K-4, Saxe Middle School serving grades 5-8, and New Canaan High School. Nearly 90% of graduates continue with formal education.  There are three fine private schools and numerous nursery schools.

Recreation - The 300-acre Waveny Park, 14 acre Kiwanis Park, and 24-acre Mead Park provide facilities for tennis, paddle tennis, picnicking, nature walks, cross country skiing, and swimming. Also available are a nature center located in a 40-acre park, numerous sports fields, and bridle paths. The YMCA serves the total family as a nonprofit organization. Four private clubs include the New Canaan Winter Club, which provides figure skating and hockey programs for its members.

Transportation - The New Haven line of Metro-North Railroad provides service to New York City via the New Canaan spur, which ends in the village. Commuting time is about 70 minutes. Connecticut Limousine provides regularly scheduled service to Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark airports. Access to neighboring communities is convenient via the Merritt Parkway.

Government - New Canaan is governed by the administrative three-member Board of Selectmen and the legislative 12-member Town Council.

New Canaan Library - The New Canaan Library has served local readers since 1877, when it was founded by volunteers who staffed it as a reading room on Elm Street.  The Library expanded in 1937, 1952, and again in 1979 with the addition of the Lapham Wing.  Growth of the Library’s collection from a few hundred donated volumes to 170,000 volumes today has occurred parallel to growth in daily visitors and circulation of materials.
